Introduction to Information Architecture

We live in a complex information society where quick and convenient access to the information has become a fundamental expectation in all aspects of our lives. Information architecture, where information is structured and categorised to be found and understood quickly, is now an essential skill for business and IT professionals.


This 1 day course introduces information architecture including the elements of IA and the tools to capture content requirements for an organisation. Information management systems are discussed as a core enabler of information architecture.


This course will be delivered by Equinox training partner Alex Dean. Alex is a specialist consultant in the areas of information architecture and Microsoft Sharepoint. He holds a number of Microsoft certifications and is a Microsoft Certified Trainer. He teaches numerous courses throughout New Zealand, Australia and Europe.

Microsoft Sharepoint will be used as one information management system to demonstrate the above topics, but the topics are equally applicable to other information management systems.


The Elements of Information Architecture

  • Usability
  • Interface design
  • Content layout
  • Content structure
  • Navigation
  • Taxonomy

Students will exchange experiences and establish a common vocabulary for the remainder of the course.

The Tools of the Information Architect

  • Card sorting
  • Mind mapping
  • User research

The above tools and techniques will be explored and then applied using hands-on exercises to effectively define a taxonomy for an organisation.
