Our closing remarks at the IIBA 'BA Development Day'

As premier sponsors of the inaugural IIBA New Zealand Chapter "BA Development Day", we were asked to make some closing comments and here they are!

"Equinox is committed to the business analysis profession, and to business analysis capability development and delivery.

We are founding sponsors of the IIBA New Zealand Chapter, and are an IIBA Chartered Endorsed Education Provider.  We have also been proud to sponsor today's event.

Reflecting on today, there are three things I would like to highlight: business, people and capability.

Business

It's all about the business and the delivery of business value - everything else is just noise.  And if you don't understand the need, then you'll never deliver the value.  We are - first and foremost -business analysts.

People

People should always be our first priority, because people help or hinder whatever we may do.  Tools and technologies support us, but they are never a satisfactory substitute for good people.  As Kitty noted this morning, "The most complex element of any project [and, I would endeavour to suggest, of life in general!] is human behaviour".  The soft skills you have as an analyst are absolutely critical.

Capability

As analysts, we also need to focus on developing capability both within our own organisations and within ourselves.  This includes the skills, knowledge and experience we need to succeed.  You are accountable for your own career, so take responsibility for your own on-going learning and development.  Business analysts are change agents, so embrace change - run with it and direct it - but you can never stop it.  And with change comes the opportunity for creativity and innovation.

If you would like to learn more about any of these areas, come and talk to us."
