Adapting to change has become personal

The Scrum Master role was already hard enough. Then the COVID-19 pandemic sent us home from the office and suddenly Scrum Masters are trying to lead team development between people scattered around homes and office locations who interact mainly via text in instant messaging. This sudden change from face-to-face to hybrid or all remote challenges Scrum Masters, Agile Coaches and other Agile leaders to adapt to the change. Data that we collected last week revealed that many of us are still struggling with such adaptions.

As we in New Zealand are almost a week in to what is hopefully our first and only foray into level 3, I and others around me have noticed an upsurge in the amount of "well being" content appearing in their various channels. Before COVID-19 I saw some statistics that said one in four of us will experience a period of anxiety in our lives. I'd put money on that statistic being higher now.

Side note: I wrote this article just before New Zealand entered lockdown. In the weeks that have followed, I've been keeping in touch with the person whose situation I describe, and working remotely has, if anything, intensified the issues they are experiencing. Most of Equinox IT has effectively been in lockdown since we did our Remote Working test a little over two weeks ago. As we approach what is hopefully the midpoint in this phase 4 lockdown as a nation, I can see a few things coming through, references to Groundhog Day are pretty blatant, but there are also many more subtle signs that it's becoming a bit of a strain. This isn't good for anyone as at a minimum we have two more weeks of this, and most people agree, likely more.
