Equinox gets involved in government test professionals forum 2011

Last week,  Tony Hunt and I spent the day at the "Government Test Professionals Forum" in Wellington and had a great time.  With nearly 150 delegates from around New Zealand, some fantastic speakers presenting on new area's in the testing world and a couple of competitions thrown in for good measure it was a recipe for success......and it certainly was a success.

After morning tea Equinox's Piers Chamberlain and Stijn Schepers presented a well received session on 'Testing for Good Internet Delivery'.

The internet is involved in just about everything we and our customers do and the government sector is looking increasingly to E-services for service delivery efficiencies and cost reduction.  However the web technologies used to deliver these services are increasingly complex and users tolerance for slow performing sites is reducing ("I want it now").

At this session, Piers and Stijn took the delegates through some interesting facts and figures before explaining what is involved in optimising the delivery of web services. They provided advice on some free tools to use and offered some tips and tricks to the delegates.

As part of the session, Piers and Stijn showed their findings from a recent exercise they'd run which identified how well NZ organisations website performed (see below). This graph shows organisation website performance based on page size vs load time -the closer to "0" the better.

We also ran a competition and used an age old kids party game concept of "pin the tail on the donkey" where where delegates had to identify their organisations website from the many blue dots on the graph.

We had lots of entries and spent the afternoon carefully marking the results and narrowed it down to 4 entries that were pretty much spot on.  However there could only be one winner......

Congratulations to Paul Dudfield of the Department of Internal Affairs who correctly identified his organisation and was pulled out of the hat of the 4 finalists. Paul won a Victorinox Swiss Army Knife which includes a USB Flash drive with fingerprint identification (ideal for the wilderness of the testing world) and an Web Performance Assessment (WPA) for his organisation.

Well done to the members of the Government Test Professionals Board and everyone else who got involved in organising the event and making it a success. We look forward to getting involved in another successful event next year.
